Costs

Research costs are calculated by the hour and include the actual research, analysis, and reporting.  You will receive a detailed report with source citations and copies of pertinent documents.  Some clients prefer to have work completed in smaller chunks of time, such as 6-10 hours, while others simply want a professional analysis of their prior research and a plan for going forward on their own. Some clients have a complex problem that requires 20-30 hours of research or more. Feel free to email me at southernfolkfinder@gmail.com about your problem ancestor.

I currently charge $40 an hour for research projects. Effective 1 December 2017, my rate increases to $50 an hour. Additional costs are minor expenses such as copies, document retrieval, and microfilm rentals.  A 50% deposit is required and is based on the agreed-upon time limit; for example, a 10-hour project at $50 an hour ($500) will require a $250 deposit.  This partial payment enables me to cover the initial costs of your project and is subtracted from your final bill.  I can keep you informed as the project moves along. Please do not hesitate to ask questions about the expenses involved in hiring me as a professional genealogist to help you with your research.  I believe in being up-front with clients so that there are no surprises when the bill arrives!
